The City of Festivals - Six-Position PSAP Hosts Thousands of Visitors Each Year

Indio is a growing community of more than 89,000 residents located in the heart of Riverside County's Coachella Valley in Southern California. Known as the "City of Festivals," Indio hosts multiple events, including the popular Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, Stage Coach Festival, and Southwest Arts Festivals.

These popular festivals bring thousands of visitors to the city each year.

This vibrant destination is protected by the Indio Police Department, which houses a six-position public safety answering point (PSAP) that answers more than 45,000 9-1-1 calls and approximatley189,000 non-emergency calls annually.

Facing Economic Uncertainties

Like many PSAPs its size, the Indio Police Department has faced economic uncertainties that have led to staffing reductions, requiring it to do more with fewer resources as its population continues to grow.

In this environment, having the best-in-class technology to meet its evolving needs is essential.

"We have been an Airbus DS Communications customer for 20 years," said Lori Brown, Communications Supervisor, Indio Police Department. "The company has been a great partner. It gives us a voice in the development of its technology, and we can see how our input makes its way into the final product."

The Indio Police Department is a three-time beta tester for Airbus DS Communications, and has provided feedback on the company's VESTA® 9-1-1 solution, as well as VESTA® Analytics and VESTA® Map.

Interoperability and Collaboration

The department recently upgraded to the newest version of the VESTA 9-1-1 call handling solution, providing much needed interoperability. Indio is now able to collaborate with the local sheriff's departments and other neighboring public safety professionals including the Eastern Riverside County Interoperable Communications Authority (ERICA), a joint powers authority between the Cities of Indio, Desert Hot Springs, Palm Springs, Cathedral City, and Beaumont.

With the influx of thousands of tourists during festival season, the VESTA 9-1-1 solution provides the Indio Police Department with the scalability and flexibility it needs to handle the increase in emergency calls.

"VESTA 9-1-1 has put the Indio Police Department on the path for Next Generation 9-1-1 by providing the IP network and the capability to implement text-to- 9-1-1," added Brown. "We're also now able to customize the user interface to match our workflow which has helped our Calltakers manage and organize incoming calls."

"From its customer support and training teams to its beta staff, Airbus DS Communications is always there to listen to our agency's needs. The company has supported us every step of the way as we work to improve public safety in our community."
