Meet the Team – Part 1

It’s important to know who has your back—who you can count on to be there when you need them the most.

At Airbus DS Communications, the home of VESTA, keeping people connected when it matters most is what we do. It’s what we’ve done for more than 40 years.

Our VESTA® 9-1-1 solutions have been in operation in the Mid-Atlantic Region going on 20 years, and we want you to meet the team who supports you and who you can count on every step of the way.

Leon Malinoski

Regional Sales Director | Hometown: Effort, PA

For the past 23 years, Leon has worked to help public safety professionals do their job to save lives. He leads the sales team, which is the key resource for public safety agencies, customers and channel partners, in the Mid-Atlantic region and beyond.

“I am always amazed by the passion and commitment public safety individuals have for serving their communities. I admire and respect what these dedicated individuals do each and every day.”

“My team has the opportunity to sit down with many agencies that have different goals and different struggles. We are a resource to help them solve the puzzle, build a solution, realize a goal, and establish a long term plan for the communities they serve.”

Mark Cress

Regional Sales Director | Hometown: Montgomery County, MD

When you speak with Mark, one of the first things you notice right up front is his passion for helping customers. “Each customer is unique and what I really enjoy is developing a solution that meets their needs and requirements.”

For the last 20 years, Mark has worked in the land mobile radio business helping customers do just that. Mark has the opportunity to meet with a wide variety of state and local public safety individuals to assist them in solving their radio communication challenges with advanced technology solutions.

“The customers we support put their lives on the line every day to support and protect our communities. When the technology we provide helps them even just a little at their life-saving work, what could be more important?”

Jeff Jurewicz

Field Engineer, Call Center Applications | Hometown: Genoa City, WI

“When I do a system install, I treat it as if my family depends on it. I want to know that the system I put in will work and be reliable, so if a member of my family had to dial 9-1-1, it would be handled properly, with no problem.”

Jeff has been with Airbus DS Communications for 16 years and in the public safety industry for 30. His work today puts him on the cutting edge of Next Generation 9-1-1. Simply put, he knows his stuff.

"We have so much new technology coming with NG9-1-1. It’s rewarding to be in a job where you have the opportunity to be on the frontline."

Currently, Jeff is working with the Anne Arundel County Police Department, in Maryland on the installation of their new VESTA® 9-1-1 solution.

Cathy Kurnas

Senior Project Manager Development | Hometown: Todd, PA

Even on the toughest days, Cathy values her work. “I know what we do makes a difference in an emergency, and that matters.”

Cathy, a certified Project Management Professional (PMP), has directed some of the largest and most complex projects here at the home of VESTA. This experience, combined with her former position as the 9-1-1 Director for the Anne Arundel County Police Department in Maryland, gives her a unique perspective on what it takes to be a successful project manager.

“I continually ask myself, ‘Am I keeping all the lines of communication open? Am I on high alert for any discrepancies or gaps? Am I keeping the team informed of them so we can address them right away?’”

“A good project manager must always take the leadership role with the team and the customer, because the customer is looking for us to fill that role.”

Cathy is working as the Program Manager for our JITC certified VESTA® 4 system for the Army in select states on the East coast. Cathy also is currently the Project Manager for her former home—the Anne Arundel County Police Department.

“It has truly been a homecoming for me. I am delighted to be able to help the county take such an important step in implementing NG9-1-1 with our VESTA® 9-1-1 solution.”

Ken Shuler

Senior Regional Account Manager | Hometown: Limerick, PA

Ken Shuler never met a stranger. He walks into a room and in his relaxed and sincere manner, greets you as though you are an old friend.

Before joining Airbus DS Communications, Ken spent 20 years with Montgomery County, P.A. working with the fire and ambulance services and then became the County’s Director of 9-1-1 and Emergency Dispatch.

For 14 years now, Ken has been an integral part of the Airbus DS Communications team. And even though he has seen many changes during that time, he remains true to one point, “Regardless of the changes, it’s important to always be real with those you serve. The personal touch and attention that we give our customers is so important.”

Outside of his day job, he is a volunteer fireman for the Limerick Fire Company in Montgomery County. He also has been the volunteer Chief of two different departments (Trappe Fire Co. & Limerick). All told, he has been a volunteer firefighter for 34 years.
