How Long Does It Take?

PSAPs ask us all time – how long is getting to NG9-1-1 supposed to take? You ask 10 people, you will probably get 10 different answers. But our response, based on the hundreds of PSAPs we work with every day is that it will take time – likely 3 – 5 years.

Think of the 9 Steps to NG9-1-1 as occurring over 3 years –

The reason we extend this series through September is to allow PSAPs time to analyze each step and the accompanying activities in preparation for the next session.

Overall Objective of the 3-Part Series

  • Provide PSAPs the information to develop a manageable strategy and a clear path to NG9-1-1
  • Break the overwhelming aspects of full Next Generation 9-1-1 (NG9-1-1) into logical steps
  • Define the discrete phases that must occur with identifiable activities and benefits
  • Identify how investments can be timed with measureable service improvements
  • Pinpoint how the preliminary steps naturally progress into full deployment
  • Spotlight how each step can deliver incremental value and builds on previous investments

End Result

The end result is that PSAPs walk away with not just a plan to implement NG9-1-1, but a plan that includes the necessary activities they need to accomplish with each step. This is essentially a mini course in creating a customized plan for your NG9-1-1 center.

What is this all about?

We want to clear the fog around what really needs to happen to get to Next Generation. To do that we are offering a three-part series, starting June 17, that is based on the questions and comments from many of you about how to move from where you are today to the i3 environment in a way that makes sense for your center and your budget.

What will you cover?

We will layout the steps, very simply and logically, that are necessary to move from the legacy environment to Next Generation. We will also present the activities associated with each step so you have a pragmatic way to approach NG9-1-1 implementation from both a planning and an investment perspective.

What about other services, like radio?

We will be looking at how radio fits into the picture of Next Generation and the benefits of IP for all public safety services so personnel from the radio side of the house will also benefit.
